  1. Bar review: Les Partners Lounge goes old-school in Clearwater

    Bars & Spirits

There are some local places that I'm shocked aren't more well known, and I think that's the result of a general aversion to stepping out of one's comfort zone. I make regular concerted efforts to step outside of mine, which often leads me to strange and rewarding drinking establishments.

Les Partners Lounge is an old-school, smoker-friendly cocktail lounge and live music venue tucked away in a nondescript shopping plaza in Island Estates.
  2. Local craft beer of the week: Plongeur a L'eponge, Saint Somewhere Brewing Co.

    Bars & Spirits

Tarpon Springs' Saint Somewhere Brewing Co. has a somewhat idiosyncratic approach to wild ale brewing, utilizing an open brewing approach involving uncovered fermenters in order to brew beer with local ambient microbes, reminiscent in some ways to the fermentation techniques used by rustic farmhouse breweries in Belgium …

  3. Wine of the week: Root: 1 2016 Sauvignon Blanc from Casablanca Valley in Chile

    Bars & Spirits

Sauvignon blanc is my favorite summer wine, but I've discovered it's one of those love-it-or-hate-it varietals. To some palates, its astringent tang is refreshing, while others find it sour. And that trademark musky aroma (sometimes described as resembling that of tomcat pee) can be off-putting.

  4. Bar review: Happy hour, and 96-ounce Moscow Mules, beckon at Blind Goat in Tampa

    Bars & Spirits

I'm not a big happy hour guy, but I am a fan of bold claims, so I had to check out Blind Goat Food & Drink Co. when I saw it advertising "South Tampa's best happy hour."

The Blind Goat Food & Drink Co., in the Palma Ceia neighborhood of South Tampa, is a go-to place for locals. On weekends, try the all-you-can-drink Bloody Marys, mimosas and Shock Top tallboys for $15.
  5. Local craft beer of the week: Green Bench's Guava Florida IPA

    Bars & Spirits

Using the tongue-in-cheek hashtag #weinventedthis, St. Pete's Green Bench Brewing has launched a new limited-release brew that combines three of today's biggest — and most polarizing — IPA trends: sour IPAs, fruited IPAs and, of course, the dense, fruit smoothie-like haze of the New England IPA.
