At least 5,000 sunglasses-wearing rubber ducks will be dumped into the Hillsborough River in downtown Tampa on Saturday, where their adoptive parents will watch them "race" for cash prizes.

The Incredible Duck Race begins at 10 a.m. at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park. The event is a fundraiser organized by the Kiwanis Club of Tampa, which said it has partnered with a company that runs similar rubber duck races all over the world.

Ducks can be adopted at tampaduckrace.com for $5. Each duck is marked with a number, and whoever adopts the first, second and third place ducks will win cash prizes, including $5,000 for first.

On its Facebook page, the Kiwanis Club said it has "taken many measures to be sure that these ducks are not a threat to our beautiful waterway. The ducks will be contained in a lane and funneled to the finish line. We will have several boats and volunteers on hand to help make sure all of the ducks are collected and accounted for."

The Duck Race is free for spectators, though the Glazer Children's Museum at 110 W. Gasparilla Plaza is hosting a Quack To School event with duck-themed activities after the race. Admission to the museum is $15 for adults, $9.50 for children.
